MUMBAI TO BUILD €42M COLABA WASTEWATER TREATMENT PROJECT

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has awarded SUEZ a contract to design, build and operate (DBO) the 37,000 m3/day Colaba Wastewater Treatment plant (WWTP).

The three year construction contract will be followed by 15 years of operation amounting to a total of €42 million of revenue for SUEZ.

Mumbai, with a population of more than 15 million, has seen intense urbanisation and population growth over the last few decades resulting in increasing pressure on water resources.

The existing sewage infrastructure consisting of a 1,500 km network which collects 1.7 million m3/day is not enough to treat the increasing quantity of sewage water.

To address this issue, MCGM has launched the Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project (MSDP) Stage-II Master Plan that covers the development of wastewater treatment and facilities by 2025 to meet the projected flows (read WWi article).

MSDP, which will be funded by Atal Mission For Rejuvenation And Urban Transformation (AMRUT), has proposed the upgrade of existing sewage plants and the construction of seven new ones in Mumbai localities (Colaba, Worli, Bandra, Versova, Malad, Ghatkopar and Bhandup).

The newly awarded Colaba Wastewater Treatment facility is part of this MSDP project. As part of the development, it will be equipped with Disc Filtration & Chlorination for a tertiary treatment, allowing potential reuse of treated wastewater.

SUEZ has worked with MCGM in drinking water for the last 35 years. During this time, the company designed and built the drinking water treatment plants at Panjarapur and Bhandup, having a combined production capacity of 3.4 million m3/day, for over 15 million people in city of Mumbai and Greater Mumbai region.

SUEZ is presently working with MCGM in a contract to build and operate a new drinking water treatment plant at Vihar Lake, incorporating the degremont® clarification technology, AquaDAF®2.

It is also supporting MCGM in implementing the Water Distribution System Improvement Programme (WDIP) to improve drinking water networks and distribution conditions to Mumbai’s inhabitants, under a 5-year contract worth €31 million in revenue.
