[미국] 플린트, 물부족 해소에 최소 2년 소요 예상

카렌 위버(Karen Weaver) 플린트(Flint) 시장은 미국 환경보호국(EPA)에 전달한 문서를 통해 플린트 지역의 물부족 문제가 향후 약 2년간 지속될 전망이라고 밝혔다.  

카렌 위버 시장은 새로운 수처리 설비가 가동되기까지의 긴 테스트 및 시공 과정을 언급하면서 미시간(Michigan) 주가 2019년까지 납 등의 기타 오염 물질을 처리하지 못할 것이라고 지적했다.  

2014년 당국은 도시의 수원을 휴런 호수(Lake Huron)에서 플린트 강(Flint River)으로 변경한 바 있다. 최근 발표된 검사에서 물 속 납 수준이 기준치에 적합한 것으로 나타났으나, 당국은 아직까지도 수돗물을 아무런 정수과정 없이 식수로 사용하지 않도록 주민들에게 요구하고 있다.

FLINT: Mayor says town needs two more years to alleviate water woes

In a letter to the EPA this week, Flint mayor Karen Weaver said the city's water crisis could continue for another two years.

Weaver said the Michigan city will not be able to treat its own water for lead and other contaminants until 2019, and pointed to a lengthy construction and testing process for a new water treatment plant to become operational.

"To expedite completion of the project and minimize cost, a design/build project delivery method is proposed," she wrote. "Based on this approach, an August, 2019, completion date is anticipated for the treatment plant improvements."

In 2014, officials switched the city's water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River. The corrosive water, flowing through older lead service lines caused lead to leach into the city's drinking water. While recent tests have shown the water's lead levels to be safe, officials are still asking residents not to cook or drink the water without proper filtration.
