[싱가포르] 그라디언트, 싱가포르에 R&D센터 설립
미국 보스턴에 본사르 둔 수처리기업인 그라디언트 쿠퍼레이션(Gradiant Corporation)은 물부족 문제를 줄이기 위한 솔루션을 개발하기 위해 싱가포르에 새로운 연구개발(R&D) 센터를 설립했다고 발표했다.
글로벌 워터 테크놀로지 혁신의 중심지로 널리 알려진 싱가포르에서 기반을 구축하게 되면 그라디언트(Gradiant)는 세계적 수준의 인재와 시설을 활용하여 회사의 혁신과 상업화 노력을 한층 강화할 수 있게 될 것으로 기대하고 있다.
싱가포르 경제개발이사회(Singapore Economic Development Board)의 지원을 받아 싱가포르에 아시아 태평양 본부를 설립함으로써 그라디언트는 산업 담수화, 염수 최소화 및 용수 재사용을 위한 혁신적인 솔루션 개발을 신속하게 진행할 수 있게 됐다.
싱가포르에 있는 그라디언트의 R&D 센터는 MIT에서 훈련받은 10명의 상급 수자원 및 엔지니어를 고용하여 연말까지 팀의 규모를 두 배로 늘리고 싱가포르의 수처리 분야에서 풍부한 인재를 활용할 계획입니다.
그라디언트의 CTO이자 공동설립자인 프라카시 고빈단(Prakash Govindan)이 싱가포르 기반 팀을 이끈다.
고빈단(Govindan)은 "싱가포르에 사업을 확장함으로써 R&D 센터는 물 혁신 부문의 최전선에 위치하게 될 것”이라면서 "R&D 센터 확장으로 인해 아시아 태평양 지역 및 전 세계에서 물 재사용, 담수화 및 제로(zero liquid) 배출 프로그램을 위한 혁신적이고 업계 최고의 솔루션을 지속적으로 제공함에 따라 Gradiant는 싱가포르에서 강력한 연구 및 사업 입지를 구축하게 될 것"이라고 강조했다.
싱가포르는 하·폐수 재이용 및 해수 담수화와 같은 세계적 도전 과제에 대한 세계에서 가장 혁신적인 솔루션의 선도적인 도시이다. 물과 환경의 지속가능성은 2006년부터 물산업에 투자된 6억7,000만 달러의 정부 기금과 현재 싱가포르에 기반을 둔 200개가 넘는 물 회사들에 핵심적인 기둥이 되었다.
싱가포르 경제개발위원회(Singapore Economic Development Board)의 클린테크(Cleantech) 전무이사인 지안 이후센(Gian Yi-Hsen)은 "싱가포르는 획기적인 아이디어와 솔루션의 상업화를위한 신뢰할 수있는 혁신의 장소이다"라면서 "Gradiant의 최신 싱가포르 투자는 수자원 생태계의 다양성, 특히 건축 기술 및 산업 용수 솔루션의 전문 인력을 향상시킬 것이다. 싱가포르에서 본사를 통해 이 지역의 Gradiant 기술이 성장하기를 기대한다"고 말했다.
그라디언트(Gradiant)가 아시아 태평양 지역에서의 입지를 강화함에 따라 싱가포르로 옮겨 갔다. Gradiant는 지난 4월 인도 첸나이(Chennai)에 본사를 둔 인도 자회사를 설립했으며, 지난달 그라이언트 차이나(Gradiant China)의 계획과 리더십을 발표했다.
이 회사의 북미사업에는 최대 규모의 자회사인 그라디언트 에너지 서비스(Gradiant Energy Services)로, 100명 이상의 직원이 근무하는 석유 및 가스 분야의 유전 서비스 사업이 포함되어 있다.

Gradiant unveils Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore
BOSTON and SINGAPORE, JULY 16, 2018 - To further its commitment to developing solutions aimed at reducing water scarcity concerns, Gradiant Corporation has announced the establishment of a new research and development (R&D) center in Singapore which will also serve as the company’s Asia-Pacific headquarters. Widely renowned as a global water technology innovation hub, establishing a base in Singapore will enable Gradiant to leverage world-class talent and facilities to further strengthen the company’s innovation and commercialization efforts.
The creation of this Asia-Pacific headquarters, supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board, will allow Gradiant to expedite the development of innovative solutions for industrial desalination, brine minimization and water reuse. Gradiant’s facility in Singapore will initially employ 10 senior water scientists and engineers, many of whom were trained at MIT, with plans to double the size of the team by year-end, capitalizing on Singapore’s deep pool of talent in the water technology sector. Gradiant’s CTO and co-founder Prakash Govindan will lead the Singapore-based team.
“By expanding operations to Singapore, our R&D Center of Excellence will be located on the front lines of the water innovation sector,” said Govindan. “This expansion will enable Gradiant to build a strong research and business presence in Singapore as we continue to provide innovative, industry-leading solutions for water reuse, desalination and zero liquid discharge applications across the Asia-Pacific region and around the world.”
Singapore has proven itself to be a leading incubator for some of the world’s most innovative solutions to global challenges, such as in wastewater reclamation and seawater desalination. Water and environmental sustainability have become a core pillar with $670 million of government funding invested in the water industry since 2006 and over 200 water companies currently based in Singapore.
“Singapore is a trusted innovation location for the commercialization of groundbreaking ideas and solutions,” said Mr. Gian Yi-Hsen, Executive Director, Cleantech, Singapore Economic Development Board. “Gradiant’s latest investment in Singapore will enhance the diversity of our water ecosystem, in particular building technology and specialized talent in industrial water solutions. Gradiant’s move to Singapore further cements the company’s growing presence in the Asia-Pacific region. In April, Gradiant established an Indian subsidiary based in Chennai while last month it unveiled plans and leadership for Gradiant China. The company’s North American operations include its largest subsidiary, Gradiant Energy Services, an oilfield services business focused on unconventional oil and gas with over 100 employees.
