일회용 플라스틱은 해양 플라스틱 오염을 고려할 때 가장 명백한 범죄자이다. 그러나 플라스틱 오염의 가장 큰 범인은 마음의 앞에 있지 않을 수도 있는 것, 즉 우리의 옷이다.

해양에서 발견되는 150만 미터 톤의 마이크로 플라스틱 중 35% 이상이 합성섬유에서 나온다. 더 중요한 것은 의복에서 흘려진 플라스틱 마이크로 섬유가 너무 작아 육안으로 볼 수 없으며 해양 생물이 그들을 섭취하고 있기 때문이다. 우리는 이제 우리의 먹이사슬에서 플라스틱 미세 섬유의 흔적을 발견하고 있다.

자연으로 이동하고 소용돌이 수영은 태평양을 가로지르는 서사적인 여행으로 2019년 6월에 시작된다.  Ben Lecomte는 매년 세계에서 생산되는 플라스틱 3억 톤을 대표하는 플라스틱 소용돌이를 통해 해상 300마일을 수영할 것이다. 

'그레이트 퍼시픽 쓰레기 패치(The Great Pacific Garbage Patch)'라고도 불리는 이 소용돌이는 큰 파편에서부터 비닐 봉지, 현미경 조각과 섬유에 이르기까지 세계에서 가장 많은 해양 플라스틱 함량이다.

함께 탄 연구원은 하와이에서 캘리포니아까지 3개월 동안 조사하고 연구한다. 30∼50해리마다 표본을 채취하여 태평양 전역의 플라스틱 오염에 대한 포괄적인 통일 고화질 샘플링을 제공하는 최초의 원정대가 되어 첫 번째 태평양 표준 데이터 세트를 구성한다.

Plastic Pollution Is Coming From an Unlikely Suspect  
 
[AUCKLAND, New Zealand, June 12, 2019 /PRNewswire] Single use plastic is the most obvious of offenders when we consider ocean plastic pollution. Yet the biggest offender of plastic pollution is something that might not be front of mind: our clothes.

Over 35% of the projected 1.5 million metric tonnes of microplastics found in the oceans come from synthetic textiles[1]. What's even more concerning is the plastic microfibres shed from clothing are so small that they can't be seen by the naked eye and as such marine life are ingesting them. We are now finding traces of plastic microfibres in our food chain[2].

Ben Lecomte will swim 300 nautical miles through the plastic Vortex, representing the 300 million tonnes of plastic produced in the world each year. Commonly known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the Vortex is the highest concentration of ocean plastic in the world, from large debris to plastic bags to microscopic fragments and fibres.

The crew will explore and research the Vortex from Hawaii to California over a period of three months. Taking samples every 30 to 50 nautical miles, the crew will be the first expedition to provide an extensive, unified high-definition sampling on plastic pollution across the Pacific Ocean, forming the first trans-Pacific data set.
