[미국] TWC, 물문제 해결 국제적 영향력 확대
스페인의 탈루냐 워터파트너십(CWP)과 MOU 통해 해외 네트워크 강화
한국 부광테크 자회사인 투모로우워터를 2021년 시범사업자로 선정하기도
 

미국 밀워키에 소재한 물위원회(TWC ; The Water Council)는 10월 18일 스페인 카탈루냐(Catalonia)에서 열린 카탈루냐 워터파트너십(CWP ; Catalan Water Partnership)과의 양해각서(MOU) 갱신을 발표하면서 지구촌의 중대한 물문제 해결을 위해 전 세계적으로 지속적으로 인맥을 키우고 있다.

2018년 처음 결성된 파트너십의 목표는 아이디어를 교환하고 공동 이니셔티브를 협업하며 혁신과 비즈니스 기회를 앞당길 수 있는 새로운 문을 여는 것이다. 각서 서명 이후 CWP(카탈루냐 워터파트너십) 회원 2명이 TWC에 가입했고, CWP 회원 12명이 2019년 가을 밀워키를 방문했으며, 두 기관은 2020년 가상 문화교류 및 시장방문을 진행했다.

이번 파트너십을 통해 얻은 뚜렷한 성과 중 하나는 올해 초 스페인 기업 시그마 다프 클래리어스(SIGMA DAF Clarifiers)와 밀워키 기업 클리어워터 인더스트리(Clearwater Industries)가 결성한 합작법인이다. TWC는 시그마 다프(SIGMA DAF)가 미국의 파트너를 찾는 것을 돕기 위해 여러 회사에 시그마 다프를 소개했고, 클리어워터 인더스트리는 확실히 적합했다.

TWC와 클리어워터(Clearwater) 대표들은 이날 시카고에서 열리는 물 전문가를 위한 글로벌 컨퍼런스인 WEFTEC에서 합작 사업에 대해 더 많은 이야기를 나눌 예정이다. 
 

CWP(카탈루냐 워터파트너십)의 자비에 아모레스(Xavier Amores) 이사는 "지난 3년 동안 TWC(물위원회)와 CWP는 공동 이벤트 구성을 통해 두 클러스터(cluster)의 관계자들에게 새로운 협력 기회를 제공했으며, 두 클러스터의 활동을 벤치마킹할 수 있는 기회를 가졌으며, 시그마 다프(SIGMA DAF)와 클리어워터 인더스트리(Clearwater Industries) 간의 공동 벤처 사업의 토대가 핵심 성공으로 우리의 협력을 마무리했다. 우리의 파트너십은 유익한 협력의 모델이자 양 당사자에게 분명한 윈-윈 모델임을 입증되었다"라고 말했다.

CWP 협정의 갱신은 TWC의 국제적인 영향력이 커지고 있는 사례이며 유럽 물기구들과 맺은 5개의 양해각서 중 하나이다. TWC는  유럽에서 현장 대표가 있는 유일한 미국 물 허브(U.S. water hub)이다. 다음은 조직의 국제적 범위에 대한 몇 가지 최신 사례이다.

7개의 국제 회원국이 2021년 지금까지 TWC에 가입했다. TWC의 봄 테크 챌린지에는 미국, 캐나다, 프랑스, 스페인, 이스라엘에서 지원자가 몰렸고 이스라엘 기업이 1위를 차지했다.

TWC는 이달 초 두 기관의 관계를 강화시키는 것을 목표로 한국 물클러스터(Korea Water Cluster ) 방문했다. 공교롭게도 TWC는 최근 한국기업인 BKT(부광테크)의 자회사인 투모로우워터(Tomorrow Water)를 2021년 시범사업자로 선정했다.

미국 본사가 미네소타에 있는 독일에 기반을 둔 오픈 오토메이션 글로벌 공급업체인 벡호프 오토메이션(Beckhoff Automation)은 최근 워터 TWC가 위치한 밀워키 글로벌워터센터(Global Water Center in Milwaukee)에 교육시설과 사무실을 완공했다.

TWC는 WEFTEC에 이어 영국, 프랑스, 독일, 네덜란드, 벨기에, 캐나다, 일본에 위치한 기업 대표들이 참여하는 국제 물기업 밀워키 비즈니스 개발 행사를 개최한다.

TWC의 딘 암하우스(Dean Amhaus) 사장 겸 CEO는 "TWC는 물부족, 홍수, 수질문제를 포함한 전 세계의 중대한 물위기 해결을 위해 이번 국제협력이 필요하다"라면서 "우리의 국제적인 활동은 또한 우리의 고향인 밀워키를 세계적인 물 혁신 허브로서 존중하는 마음을 반영한다"라고 말했다.

THE WATER COUNCIL GROWS INTERNATIONAL REACH
Renewal of Catalan partnership highlights TWC’s overseas network

The Water Council (TWC) announced a renewal today of its memorandum of understanding with the Catalan Water Partnership (CWP) in Catalonia, Spain, as it continues to grow its connections worldwide to solve critical global water challenges.

The goal of the partnership, originally formed in 2018, is to exchange ideas, collaborate on joint initiatives, and open new doors to advance innovation and business opportunities. Since the memorandum’s signing, two members of the Catalan Water Partnership have joined The Water Council, a dozen CWP members visited Milwaukee in fall 2019, and the two organizations held a virtual cultural exchange and market visit in 2020.

One clear success from the partnership is a joint venture formed between Spanish company SIGMA DAF Clarifiers and Milwaukee company Clearwater Industries earlier this year. The Water Council introduced SIGMA DAF to several companies to help it find a U.S. partner, and Clearwater Industries was a clear fit. 

The Water Council and Clearwater representatives will speak more about the joint venture at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at WEFTEC, the global conference for water professionals happening in Chicago.

“Over the past three years, TWC and the CWP have offered new cooperation opportunities to associates of both clusters through the organization of joint events, we had the chance to benchmark the activities of both clusters, and the foundation of the joint venture between SIGMA DAF and Clearwater Industries sealed our collaboration with a key success story. Our partnership proved a model of fruitful collaboration and a clear win-win for both parties,” said Xavier Amores, CWP director.

The renewal of the CWP agreement is an example of The Water Council’s growing international reach and one of five memorandums of understanding it has with European water organizations. The Water Council is the only U.S. water hub with on-the-ground representation in Europe. Here are a few recent examples of the organization’s international reach:

Seven international members have joined The Water Council so far in 2021. The Water Council’s spring Tech Challenge drew applicants from the U.S., Canada, France, Spain and Israel, with an Israeli company winning the top prize.

The Water Council hosted a visit from the Korea Water Cluster earlier this month with the goal of deepening the two organizations’ relationship. Coincidentally, The Water Council recently selected Tomorrow Water, a subsidiary of Korean company BKT, as a winner of its 2021 Pilot Program.

Beckhoff Automation, a global provider of open automation systems based in Germany with U.S. headquarters in Minnesota, recently completed a training facility and offices in the Global Water Center in Milwaukee, home of The Water Council.

Following WEFTEC, The Water Council will host a business development event in Milwaukee for international water companies, with representatives from companies located in the U.K., France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada and Japan.

“The Water Council believes this international cooperation is necessary to solve critical worldwide water crises, including water scarcity, flooding and water quality problems,” said Dean Amhaus, president and CEO. “Our international work also reflects the respect given to our hometown of Milwaukee as a global water innovation hub.”
