[호주] WSAA, 동티모르 물공급 프로젝트 지원
호주 상하수도협회 WSAA(Water Service Association of Australia)의 회원 유틸리티들이 동티모르 물공급 지원에 나선다.
WSAA는 13개 회원 유틸리티와 함께 발리보 하우스 트러스트(Balibo House Trust)가 추진 중인 동티모르 물공급 프로젝트를 지원한다고 지난 11월 16일 밝혔다.
이 프로젝트는 지역 샘물(local spring)의 배관을 교체하고 펌프를 설치해 지역사회에 정수된 물을 공급하는 사업이다.
안전하고 깨끗한 물의 부족은 동티모르에서 5세 미만 어린이 사망률의 주요 원인이며, 지역사회는 극심한 물부족을 겪고 있다. 노후화로 손상된 수도관은 물의 흐름을 제한하고 있다.
지역에서 물이 희소하다 보니 지역주민들, 특히 여성과 어린이들은 낮은 품질의 물을 길어 가족에게 나르는 데 매일 많은 시간을 소비하고 있다. 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 정수를 마을에 제공하면 주민들의 물 수집 부담을 줄이고 물을 끓일 필요도 없어 다른 생산적인 활동에 더 많은 시간을 할애할 수 있다.
WSAA는 이 프로젝트를 통해 지역사회 구성원의 건강, 지역사회, 고용 및 훈련 측면에서 다양한 혜택이 창출될 것으로 기대하고 있다.
WSAA 관계자는 “지속가능발전목표(SDGs)를 지원하고 촉진하기 위한 우리의 약속과 강하게 일치하는 프로젝트를 업계가 지지하는 것을 보는 것은 대단한 일”이라고 전했다.
프로젝트 지원에 동참키로 한 WSAA 회원 유틸리티는 △야라 밸리 워터(Yarra Valley Water) △멜버른 워터(Melbourne Water) △워터 코퍼레이션(Water Corporation) △깁슬랜드 워터(Gippsland Water) △이스트 깁슬랜드 워터(East Gippsland Water) △사우스 이스트 워터(South East Water) △코리반 워터(Coliban Water) △수에즈(Suez) △사우스 깁슬랜드 워터(South Gippsland Water) △지브이워터(GVWater) △미드코스트 워터(MidCoast Water) △타스워터(Taswater) △와넌 워터(Wannon Water) 13곳이다.

Water utilities get behind Balibo House Trust project
WSAA members are supporting a project being undertaken by Balibo House Trust to bring water to the community by replacing piping and installing a pump at a local spring.
Lack of safe water is a major contributor to high deaths rates of children under five in Timor Leste and the community experiences extreme water shortages and the existing damaged pipe is limiting flows.
Water is a scarce resource and many hours are spent collecting and carrying poor quality water to families each day. Providing easily accessible purified water to the town will reduce the burden of water collection, often undertaken by women and children, and remove the need to boil water as well, allowing more time to be dedicated to other activities. The project will see health benefits, community benefits and employment and training for local community members.
It is great to see the industry getting behind a project that aligns strongly with our commitment to support and promote the Sustainable Development Goals.
