[미국] ABB, 파탑스코 하수처리장 자동화 선도
글로벌 기술 회사 ABB는 파탑스코(Patapsco) 하수처리장의 자동화, 전기‧전력 관리 업그레이드를 위해 메릴랜드주 볼티모어 시와 1천만 달러 이상의 계약을 체결했다고 발표했다.
하수처리장의 자동화를 위한 3개년 프로젝트는 높은 수준의 안전 표준과 함께 최신 기술을 구현해 공장을 업그레이드할 예정이다. ABB는 산업공정을 위한 자사의 분산 제어 시스템(DCS)인 ‘AbilityTM 800xA’을 활용해 에너지 관리 시스템을 비롯한 다양한 기술을 바탕으로 시설 운영의 능률화와 효율성을 최적화할 것이라고 밝혔다.
ABB는 자동화를 통한 전기 장비의 조종과 모니터링을 통해 볼티모어 시의 폐수처리 공장의 시스템의 예방적 유지보수를 제공하고 수정 유지보수의 속도를 높여 최종적으로 공장의 운영 중단이 없도록 하는 것이다.
한편, 파탑스코 하수처리장은 일일 6천300만 갤런의 하수를 처리하며 50만 명 미만의 인구에게 서비스를 제공하고 있다. 그러나 처리장의 노후화에 따라 인근 파탑스코 강과 체서피크 만 수질 악화를 일으켜 전력 장비의 신뢰성 개선과 다운타임 방지, 에너지 효율성 제고를 위해 전사적 노력을 기울이고 있다.
브랜던 스펜서(Brandon Spencer) ABB 에너지 산업 사장은 “ABB의 기술과 전 세계 처리 시설의 현대화 작업은 파탑스코 공장에도 적용돼 볼티모어 지역 사회에 지속적이고 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 것”이라고 말하며 “ABB는 안전하고 신뢰할 수 있는 물을 제공함과 동시에 환경을 보호해 나갈 것”이라고 밝혔다.

ABB technology helps fulfill City of Baltimore’s commitment for safe, reliable wastewater and water system
ABB has secured a contract, valued at more than $10 million, from the City of Baltimore, Maryland, to upgrade the automation, electrical and power management of its Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant to improve reliability and sustain water quality for the city’s residents.
The three-year project will upgrade the plant by implementing the latest technology with the highest safety standards. ABB’s technologies, including ABB AbilityTM 800xA control system, switchgear, and an energy management system, will streamline the operations of the facility to optimize the efficiency and output and reduce costs. In addition, ABB’s monitoring system will provide preventive maintenance and escalate the pace of corrective maintenance, enabling the operator to quickly identify and correct problems before they lead to power loss or costly damage to loads. ABB’s system will also act as the foundation for any future predictive maintenance projects at the City of Baltimore treatment plants.
“ABB’s technology and experience in modernizing treatment facilities all over the world will be applied to the Patapsco Plant to ensure a sustained, positive impact on the Baltimore community,” said Brandon Spencer, President of ABB Energy Industries. “The City of Baltimore’s commitment to providing safe, reliable water, while at the same time meeting stringent environmental protection standards, is an initiative we are proud to support.”
The Patapsco Wastewater Treatment plant treats 63 million gallons of wastewater per day, serving an estimated population of just under half a million. The plant will improve the reliability of its aging power equipment to prevent downtime issues and drive energy efficiency. The reliability of the infrastructure to remove pollutants from the water is critical in protecting the Patapsco River and the Chesapeake Bay.
The City of Baltimore has utilized ABB’s control system across its two main wastewater treatment plants, Patapsco and Back River, for more than 30 years. A key part of ABB’s project management responsibility is to ensure that, during the upgrade, the plant keeps running without operational interruptions.
