[UAE] 담수화 동력 공급 위한 대체에너지 자원 모색

두바이(Dubai) 전력 및 수도 관리국은 지열에너지로 담수화를 작동시키기 위한 실행 가능성 조사 방안을 모색 중이다.  

이러한 움직임은 오는 2050년까지 천연자원을 활용해 전력의 약 75%를 생산하려는 두바이의 목표와 부합하며, 마스다르(Masdar) 연구소의 부사장인 Steve Griffiths는 “역삼투와 같은 평범한 접근법으로 가격 경쟁력을 갖춘 것”이라고 말했다.  

이어 “몇 가지 수행돼야 할 세부 사항들이 추가된다면 실행 가능한 계획이 될 것이다. 그러나 지열을 기반으로 한 담수화 자체는 무모한 프로젝트가 아니다. 독립 담수화 적용 사업으로 운영될 수도 있다”라고 말했다.  

섭씨 약 100도에 이르는 UAE의 지열 자원은 동력 생성 측면에서는 턱없이 부족한 반면 담수화에는 적합해, 앞으로 석유와 가스와 동일한 방식으로 활용될 예정이다.

UAE is eyeing alternative energy sources to power desalination

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is seeking proposals to study the feasibility of powering desalination by geothermal energy, reports The National.  

The move fits with Dubai's aim to produce 75 per cent of electricity from clean sources by 2050, and would be "cost competitive with other conventional approaches such as reverse osmosis," Masdar Institute vice president of research, Steve Griffiths, told The National.  

"It could be viable -- the details will need to be worked out, but if there's a tender for geothermal-based desalination, it's not insane. It could be running as a standalone water desalination application," he said.  

The temperature of geothermal sources in UAE is about 100 degrees celsius, and while that's too low for power generation, it can be used for desalination. Geothermal sources in UAE can be tapped in the same way as oil and gas.
