[영국] 랜디아 혼합기, 스코틀랜드하수처리장에 성공적 업그레이드
갤리포드 트라이(Galliford Try), MWH 트라이(MWHTry), MWH 트리트먼트(MWH Treatment), 블랙 앤 비치(Black & Veatch) 등이 참여하는 합작회사인 ESD는 복잡한 수중 작업(diving operation)에 이어, 영국 파이프(Fife) 지역 세인트 앤드류스(St Andrews)에 있는 스코틀랜드 워터 하수처리장(Scottish Water’s Wastewater Treatment Plant ; WWTP)에서 혼합작업(mixing operation)의 성공적인 업그레이드를 완료했다.
깊이 6m의 제로 가시성(zero-visibility) 하·폐수에서 3명의 다이버(및 다이빙 관리자)가 산화 배수로(oxidation ditches)의 중요한 양극화 과정에 방해되지 않도록 보장했는데, 2002년부터는 3개의 매우 낮은 rpm의 랜디아 혼합기(Landia mixer)가 이 과정을 제공해왔다.
세계에서 가장 오래된 골프장에서 불과 몇 마일 떨어진 15세기에 골프라는 스포츠가 처음 열렸던 곳과 가까운 곳에 위치한 스코틀랜드 워터 하수처리장(WWTP)은 최종 배출물을 위한 자외선 필터를 갖추고 있어 전 세계 방문객들을 환영하는 극도로 민감한 지역에 있다.
34rpm에서 4kW 랜디아 혼합기(Landia mixer)는 처리공정에 손상을 주는 플록 쉬어(floc shear)를 유발하지 않도록 슬러지를 매우 부드럽게 혼합한다.
세인트 앤드루스 WWTP 현장 관리자인 앨런 미언스(Alan Mearns)는 "랜디아 혼합기(Landia mixer)는 항상 잘 작동했다"면서 "ESD가 스코틀랜드의 상하수 인프라에 대한 개선사항을 전달함에 따라 이것이 우리가 원하는 신뢰할 수 있는 장비의 유형이다"라고 강조했다.
앨런 미언스(Alan Mearns) 현장관리자는 이어 "이런 도전적인 환경에서 순전히 손만 대면 작업을 하는 것은 잠수부들에게는 전혀 쉽지 않았지만 새로운 가이드 레일이 포함된 3일간의 설치 작업 동안 잠수부들은 우리가 여전히 우리의 공정을 위해 충분한 흐름을 유지할 수 있도록 하는 데 큰 역할을 했다"고 덧붙였다.
주 산화 배수로((oxidation ditches))에 있는 조절 가능한 3개의 잠수식 랜디아 장치 외에 SAS(Surplus Activated Sludge)용 슬러지 홀딩 탱크(Sludge Holding tank)에는 랜디아 혼합기(Landia mixer)가 1개, 산화식 흡입구 탱크(anoxic Inlet Tank)에 하나의 랜디아 혼합기(Landia mixer)가 있다.
4시간마다 10분씩 정차하는 것 외에도 산화 배수로에 있는 세 개의 랜디아 혼합기(Landia mixer)는 연중무휴 24시간 내내 작동하며, 단지 초당 0.3m의 완만한 흐름을 유지한다.

Forward Dive For Long-Lasting Landia Mixers At St Andrews
Following an intricate diving operation, ESD (the joint venture involving Galliford Try, MWH Treatment and Black & Veatch) has completed the successful upgrade of its mixing operation at Scottish Water’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in St Andrews, Fife.
In 6m-deep zero-visibility wastewater, three divers (and a dive manager) ensured that there was no interruption to the crucial aeration process in the oxidation ditches, which since 2002 has been served by three very low rpm Landia mixers.
Situated close to where the sport of golf was first played in the 15th century, just a few miles from the oldest golf course in the world, the WWTP, which has UV filters for its final effluent, is in an extremely sensitive area that welcomes visitors from all over world.
At just 34 rpm, the 4kW Landia mixers very gently mix sludge so as not to cause any process-damaging floc shear.
“The Landia mixers have always worked well”, said St Andrews WWTP Site Manager, Alan Mearns. “This is the type of reliable equipment we want as ESD delivers improvements to Scotland’s water and wastewater infrastructure”.
He added: “Working purely by touch in such a challenging environment wasn’t easy at all for the divers, but over the 3-day installation that included new guide rails, they did a great job in ensuring that we could still maintain sufficient flow for our process”.
In addition to the three adjustable-pitch submersible Landia units in the main oxidation ditch, there is also one Landia mixer in the Sludge Holding tank for SAS (Surplus Activated Sludge) and one in the anoxic Inlet Tank.
Apart from a 10-minute stop every 4 hours, the three Landia mixers in the oxidation ditch run 24/7, sustaining a required gentle flow of just 0.3 metres per second.
