미국의 글로벌 물·화학기업인 튜폰(DuPont)과 미국의 국제비영리단체인 Water.org는 물 부족으로 인해 가장 취약한 지역사회에 안전한 물에 대한 접근성을 높이기 위해 협력하기로 했다.

이번 파트너십은 정수 및 정화 솔루션 분야에서 듀폰의 기술 리더십과 글로벌 물 위기에 대한 시장 주도형 금융 솔루션 개척에 대한 Water.org의 전문성이 결합한 것이다.

이 기관들은 빈곤한 사람들을 위해 확장 가능한 기후 회복성과 지속가능한 물 솔루션을 혁신하고 배포하는 방법에 대해 협력을 할 계획이다.

Water.org의 공동 설립자인 게리 화이트(Gary White)는 “이번 파트너십은 우리의 일생 동안 물 위기를 해결하는 것이 가능하다는 공통된 믿음에 기반을 두고 있다”라면서 “Water.org는 듀폰과 협력하여 기술을 활용하여 도움이 필요한 사람들에게 생존과 번영에 필요한 물과 위생 솔루션을 제공할 수 있는 역량을 강화할 수 있는 새로운 기회를 발굴하기를 기대하고 있다”라고 말했다.

듀폰은 우선 Water.org가 운영하는 국가의 물 부족과 기후 문제에 직면한 지역 10만 명의 사람들에게 1년간 안전한 물을 이용할 수 있는 기회를 제공하거나 위생 시설을 개선할 수 있는 최초 보조금을 지원하기로 했다.

여기에는 인도, 인도네시아, 방글라데시, 필리핀, 캄보디아, 케냐, 탄자니아, 우간다, 멕시코, 브라질, 페루 등이 포함되었다. 이 기금은 가난한 사람들과 안전한 물과 위생시설을 이용할 수 있는 사람들 사이의 재정적 장벽을 무너뜨리는 Water.org의 솔루션인 워터크레딧(WaterCredit)을 지원한다.

듀폰 워터 솔루션(DuPont Water Solutions)의 HP 난다(Nanda) 글로벌 부사장은 “전 세계적으로 우리는 물의 관점에서 기후변화의 영향을 목격하고 있다. 빈곤층은 지구 온난화로 인한 물 부족의 증가하는 위협에 가장 취약하다”라면서 “우리는 현재 진행 중인 물 위기를 피할 수 있고 물이 풍부하고 저렴하며 거주 지역에 관계없이 모든 사람이 이용할 수 있다고 믿는다. Water.org와 같은 매우 영향력 있고 창의적인 조직과의 파트너십을 통해 이 비전이 현실이 되었다”라고 말했다.

오늘날, 전 세계 인구 중 10%에 달하는 7억7천100만 명이 안전한 식수에 접근할 수 없다. 유엔 지속가능개발목표 제6호(SDG6)는 국가들이 물이 깨끗하고, 접근이 가능하고, 재사용되고, 재활용되고, 보호되도록 하고, 위생 및 하·폐수 처리 노력이 현저하게 확장될 것을 촉구하고 있다.

듀폰 워터 솔루션(DuPont Water Solutions)의 지속가능성 리더인 킴벌리 쿠피에키(Kimberly Kupiecki)는 “안전한 물에 대한 안정적인 접근은 매일 몇 마일을 걸으며 기본적인 필요를 위해 안전하지 않은 물을 찾는 사람들을 위한 판도를 바꾸는 것이다. 그것은 어린 아이들이 학교에 다닐 수 있게 하고, 가족들이 부를 창출할 수 있게 하며, 전반적으로 건강과 안녕을 증진시킨다” 라면서 “SDG6은 그 자체로 인류 번영을 위한 매우 근본적인 목표이지만, 본질적으로 지속가능한 발전을 위한 거의 모든 다른 목표와 상호 연관되어 있다”라고 말했다.

듀폰과 Water.org는 넷플릭스(Netflix)에서 볼 수 있는 다큐멘터리 ‘브레이브 블루 월드(Brave Blue World)’에 참여한 후 서로의 작품을 소개받았는데, 이 다큐멘터리는 인류가 어떻게 새로운 기술과 혁신을 채택하고 물이 어떻게 관리되는지 다시 생각해보는 낙관적인 그림을 그리고 있다.

듀폰과 Water.org는 또한 물의 스트레스를 기업의 최우선 과제로 격상시키고, 물 스트레스를 받는 분지에서의 집단 행동과 야심적이고 정량화 가능한 물 관리 약속을 통해 세계의 담수 자원을 보존하는 것을 목표로 하는 유엔 글로벌 컴팩트(UN Global Compact)의 CEO 주도 연합인 물회복연합(Water Resolient Coalition)을 통해 협력하고 있다.

DuPont and Water.org Partner to Increase Global Access to Safe Water 
Collaborating on Sustainable Water Solutions for People Living in Poverty 
 

DuPont and Water.org have partnered to increase global access to safe water, with a focus on communities most vulnerable to the consequences of water scarcity. 

The partnership combines DuPont’s technical leadership in water filtration and purification solutions with Water.org’s expertise in pioneering market-driven financial solutions to the global water crisis.

The organizations intend to collaborate on ways to innovate and deploy climate-resilient, sustainable water solutions that can scale to people living in poverty.

“This partnership is based in the shared belief that solving the water crisis is possible within our lifetimes,” said Gary White, Co-founder of Water.org. “Our team looks forward to working with DuPont to uncover new opportunities to leverage technology to empower people in need with the water and sanitation solutions they need to survive and thrive.”

As a start, DuPont awarded Water.org an initial grant to provide 100,000 people with one year of access to safe water or improved sanitation, in areas facing water scarcity and climate challenges in the countries where Water.org works. 

This includes India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Cambodia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mexico, Brazil, and Peru.  The funding supports Water.org’s solution, WaterCredit, that breaks down the financial barriers between people living in poverty and access to safe water and sanitation.

“Around the world, we are witnessing the impacts of climate change through the lens of water?with those living in poverty most vulnerable to the growing threats of water scarcity caused by global warming,” said HP Nanda, Global Vice President, DuPont Water Solutions. 

“We believe the pending water crisis can be avoided, and water can become abundant, affordable and accessible to everyone?no matter where they live. It’s through partnerships with highly impactful and creative organizations like Water.org that this vision becomes a reality.” 

Today, one in 10 people around the world - 771 million people ? lack access to safe drinking water. United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 6 urges nations to ensure that water is clean, accessible, reused, recycled and protected, and that sanitation and wastewater treatment efforts are significantly expanded. 

“Reliable access to safe water is a game-changer for those who spend hours walking miles each day retrieving unsafe water for basic needs.  It allows young children to attend school, families to create wealth, and improves health and well-being overall,” said Kimberly Kupiecki, Sustainability Leader for DuPont Water Solutions. 

“SDG No. 6?while itself a critically fundamental goal for human prosperity?is essentially interconnected with almost every other goal for sustainable development.”

The two organizations were introduced to each other’s work after participating in Brave Blue World, a documentary available on Netflix that paints an optimistic picture of how humanity is adopting new technologies and innovations to re-think how water is managed. 

DuPont and Water.org are also working together through the Water Resilience Coalition, a CEO-led coalition of the UN Global Compact’s CEO Water Mandate that aims to elevate global water stress to the top of the corporate agenda and preserve the world’s freshwater resources through collective action in water-stressed basins and ambitious, quantifiable water stewardship commitments. 

DuPont believes that collaboration and collective action will be required to build a water-optimized world where each of the planet’s 7.8 billion people all have daily access to safe water.
