아랍에미리트의 선구적인 글로벌 지속가능성 및 인도주의 상인 자이드 지속가능성상(Zayed Sustainability Prize)는 14일(현지시각) 심사위원단의 심사를 거쳐 올해 글로벌 지속 가능성 이니셔티브를 발전시킨 33개 최종 후보를 발표했다. 수상자는 12월 1일 자이드 지속가능성상 시상식에서 발표되며, 시상식은 11월 30일부터 12월 12일까지 제28차 기후변화협약 당사국총회(28th Conference of the Parties of the UN Frame Work Convention on Climate Change, COP28 UAE) 기간에 열릴 예정이다.

자이드 지속가능성상 심사위원단은 보건, 식량, 에너지, 물, 기후 행동, 글로벌 고등학교 등 6개 부문에 걸쳐 접수된 5천213개의 출품작 중 33개의 최종 후보를 선출했다. 아랍에미리트의 지속가능성과 COP28 UAE 개최를 기념하기 위해 도입된 기후 행동 부문은 3천178개의 후보를 접수했다.

브라질, 인도네시아, 르완다, 미국 등 기타 26개국에서 온 결선 진출자는 중소기업, 비영리 단체, 고등학교를 대표하며, 국경을 초월해 세계적인 과제를 해결한다.

술탄 아메드 알 자베르 박사(H.E. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber) 아랍에미리트 산업첨단기술부 장관이자 자이드 지속가능성상 사무총장 겸 COP28 의장은 "자예드 지속가능성상은 지속가능성과 인도주의에 대한 헌신을 통해 우리에게 계속 영감을 주는 아랍에미리트의 선구적인 지도자 셰이크 자예드의 유산을 계승한다"며 "이 유산은 전 세계의 지역사회를 향상하려는 우리의 임무를 추진토록 한다"고 말했다.

그는 이어 "지난 15년 동안 이 상은 151개국 3억7천800만 명 이상의 삶을 변화해 긍정적인 변화를 이끌 수 있는 강력한 힘이 돼 줬다"며 "우리는 세계에서 가장 취약한 지역에서 기후와 경제 발전을 이끄는 솔루션에 인센티브를 제공하고자 한다"고 덧붙였다.

이번 대회에 모든 대륙으로부터 기록적인 출품작 수를 경신했다. 최종 후보가 제시한 혁신은 포용성에 대한 깊은 헌신과 중대한 격차를 메우기 위한 의지를 반영한다. 이러한 솔루션은 직접적으로 COP28 UAE 의제의 네 가지 주제인 △정의롭고 공평한 에너지 전환의 신속한 추진 △기후 재정 해결 △사람, 생명, 생계에 대한 집중 △완전한 포용성을 통한 전적인 지원과 일치한다. 이러한 지속가능성 개척자들의 노력은 지구를 보호하고 생계를 개선하며, 생명을 구하는 기후 진전을 위한 실용적인 솔루션에 기여할 것이다.

현재까지 이 상을 수상한 106명의 수상자를 통해 1천100만 명이 안전한 식수를, 5천400만 가구가 신뢰할 수 있는 에너지를, 350만 명이 더 영양가 있는 음식을, 72만8천 명 이상이 저렴한 의료 서비스를 이용할 수 있다.

올라푸르 라그나르 그림손(H.E. Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson) 자이드 지속가능성상 심사위원장은 "세계적인 과제와 어려움이 증가함에 따라 이번에 선정된 최종 후보 그룹은 목적을 가지고 헌신을 보임으로써 현재 당면한 요구사항을 충족하기 위해 노력하고 더 밝은 미래에 대한 희망을 불어넣는다"며 "해양 황무지를 복원하거나 기술을 활용해 더 나은 지속가능한 농장 수확량을 보장하고, 저렴한 의료 서비스를 이용할 수 없는 개인을 위해 변화를 추진하는 등 이들은 세상을 변화하고 있다"고 밝혔다.

보건 부문 최종 후보에는 알키온 바이오이노베이션(Alkion BioInnovations), 차일드라이프 재단(ChildLife Fondation), 닥터쉐어(doctor SHARE)가 선정됐다. 

알키오 바이오이노베이션은 프랑스의 중소기업으로, 대규모 의약품 및 백신에 비용 효율적이고 지속가능한 활성 성분을 공급한다. 차일드라이프재단은 파키스탄의 NPO 단체로서 혁신적인 허브 앤 스포크(Hub&Spoke) 의료 모델을 채택해 응급실을 원격 의료 위성 센터에 연결한다. 닥터쉐어는 인도네시아의 NPO로, 수상 병원을 통해 접근할 수 없는 외딴 지역에서 의료 서비스 접근성을 확대한다.

식량 부문 최종 후보에는 가자 어번 앤 애그리컬처럴 플랫폼(Gaza Urban & Peri-urban Agricultural Platform), 리젠 오가닉스(Regen Organics), 세미야 누에바(Semilla Nueva)가 선정됐다.

가자 어번 앤 페리어번 애그리컬처럴 플랫폼은 팔레스타인의 NPO로, 가자 지역의 여성 농업인들이 지역 사회의 식량 안보를 달성하도록 지원한다. 리젠 오가닉스는 케냐의 중소기업으로, 가축 사료용 곤충 기반 단백질과 원예 생산용 유기 비료를 생산하는 지자체 규모의 제조 공정에 특화된 기업이다. 세미야 누에바는 과테말라의 NPO로, 생물 강화 옥수수 종자(biofortified maize seed) 개발을 전문으로 한다.

에너지 부문 최종 후보에는 허스크 파워 시스템즈(Husk Power Systems), 이그나이트 파워(Ignite Power), 쿨복스(Koolboks)가 선정됐다.

허스크 파워 시스템즈는 미국의 중소기업으로, 가정, 소규모 기업, 보건소, 학교에 연중무휴로 재생 에너지를 공급하는 AI 기반 미니 그리드를 배포한다. 이그나이트 파워는 르완다의 중소기업으로, 라스트 마일 커뮤니티에 전기를 공급하는 태양광 발전 종량제 솔루션을 제공한다. 쿨복스는 프랑스의 중소기업으로, 임대-소유형(lease-to-own) 판매 모델을 통해 라스트 마일 커뮤니티를 위한 통합 사물 인터넷(IoT) 모니터링 기능을 갖춘 오프 그리드(off-grid) 태양광 냉장 솔루션을 제공한다.

물 부문 최종 후보에는 ADADK, 오 에 비(Eau et Vie), 트랜스폼(TransForm)이 선정됐다.

ADADK는 요르단의 중소기업으로, 머신 러닝과 증강 현실을 사용해 눈에 보이는 누수와 숨겨진 누수를 모두 감지하는 무선 스마트 센서를 사용한다. 오 에 비는 프랑스의 NPO 단체로, 빈곤한 도시 주민의 가정에 개별 수도꼭지를 설치해 슬럼가 지역에서 깨끗한 물을 이용할 수 있도록 지원한다. 트랜스폼은 덴마크의 NPO로서 에너지나 화학물질에 의존하지 않고 폐수, 하수, 슬러지를 비용 효율적으로 처리하는 혁신적인 토양 필터 기술을 활용한다.

기후 행동 최종 후보에는 카본큐어(CarbonCure), 아마존 지속 가능성 재단(Foundation for Amazon Sustainability), 켈프 블루(Kelp Blue)가 선정됐다. 글로벌 고등학교 최종 후보는 프로젝트 기반의 학생 주도 지속 가능성 솔루션을 발표했으며, 6개 지역으로 나뉜다.

카본큐어는 캐나다의 중소기업으로 탄소 제거 기술을 활용하며, CO₂를 새 콘크리트에 주입해 성능 표준을 유지하고 탄소발자국을 효과적으로 줄인다. 아마존 지속 가능성 재단은 브라질의 NPO로서 환경 보존을 증진하고 원주민 지역사회가 권리를 보호할 수 있도록 지원하는 프로젝트와 프로그램을 실행하는 데 헌신한다. 켈프 블루는 나미비아의 중소기업으로, 심해에 대규모 거대 조류 숲을 조성해 천연 해양을 복원하고 과도한 CO₂를 완화하는 데 기여한다.

보건, 식량, 에너지, 물, 기후 행동 부문의 각 수상자는 60만 달러의 상금을 받을 수 있다. 수상하는 6개 글로벌 고등학교에는 각각 최대 10만 달러가 수여된다.

자이드 지속가능성상은 아랍에미리트 건국의 아버지인 셰이크 자이드 빈 술탄 알 나히안(Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan)의 유산을 기리기 위한 상으로, 보건, 식량, 에너지, 물, 기후 행동 및 글로벌 고등학교 부문에서 혁신적인 지속 가능한 솔루션을 제공하는 단체와 고등학교를 인정하고 포상해 지속 가능한 개발과 인도주의 행동을 촉진하는 것을 목표로 설정한다.

Zayed Sustainability Prize Announces 33 Finalists Advancing Global Sustainability Initiatives

11 September 2023: Abu Dhabi, UAE: The Zayed Sustainability Prize, the UAE’s pioneering global sustainability and humanitarian award, has announced this year's finalists following a deliberation by its esteemed Jury.

The winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on 1 December during COP28 UAE, the 28th Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be held from 30 November to 12 December.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize’s Jury elected the 33 finalists from 5,213 entries received across six categories: Health, Food, Energy, Water, Climate Action and Global High Schools – a 15% increase in submissions compared to last year. The new Climate Action category, introduced to mark the UAE’s Year of Sustainability and hosting of COP28 UAE, received 3,178 nominations.

From Brazil, Indonesia, Rwanda, the United States, and 26 other countries, the finalists represent small and medium sized businesses, nonprofit organisations and high schools, and reflect the Prize’s growing mandate to reward innovations that transcend borders and tackle pressing global challenges.

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Director General of the Zayed Sustainability Prize, and COP28 President-Designate, said the finalists exemplify the remarkable ingenuity and unwavering commitment to shaping a more sustainable and resilient future for our planet.

The innovations put forth by the finalists reflect a profound dedication to inclusivity and an unyielding resolve to bridge critical gaps. These solutions directly align with the four pillars of the COP28 UAE agenda: fast-tracking a just and equitable energy transition, fixing climate finance, focusing on people, lives and livelihoods and underpinning everything with full inclusivity. Through the Prize’s 106 winners to date, 11 million people have gained access to safe drinking water, 54 million homes have gained access to reliable energy, 3.5 million people have gained access to more nutritious food, and over 728,000 people have gained access to affordable healthcare.

Health finalists focused on providing specialised medical care to remote communities.

The Health finalists are:

Alkion BioInnovations is an SME from France that specialises in supplying cost effective and sustainable active ingredients for large-scale pharmaceuticals and vaccines.

ChildLife Foundation is an NPO from Pakistan that employs an innovative Hub & Spoke healthcare model, linking Emergency Rooms as hubs to telemedicine satellite centres.

doctorSHARE is an NPO from Indonesia dedicated to expanding healthcare access in remote and inaccessible regions using barge-mounted floating hospitals. 

Food finalists focused on transforming small farmers into entrepreneurs with improved agricultural productivity, either through innovative business models or advanced technologies.

The Food finalists are:

Gaza Urban & Peri-urban Agricultural Platform (GUPAP) is an NPO from that empowers female agripreneurs in Gaza.

Regen Organics is an SME from Kenya that specialises in a municipal-scale manufacturing process that produces two valuable agricultural inputs: insect-based protein for livestock feed and organic fertiliser for horticultural production.

Semilla Nueva is an NPO from Guatemala that specialises in the development of biofortified maize seeds.

Energy finalists focused on extending clean energy access to vulnerable communities while also introducing new business models that promote a gender-inclusive clean energy sector and generate socioeconomic opportunities. 

The Energy finalists are:

Husk Power Systems is an SME from the USA that delivers AI-enabled minigrids that bring 24/7 renewable solar energy to homes, micro enterprises, streetlights, health clinics, farmers, and schools.

Ignite Power is an SME from Rwanda that specialises in delivering solar-powered pay-as-you-go solutions to electrify last mile communities.

Koolboks is an SME from France that provides off-grid solar refrigeration solutions with integrated Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring for last mile communities, through a lease-to-own sales model. 

Water finalists focused on affordable solutions to make safe drinking water and sanitation more accessible in last-mile communities.

The Water finalists are:

ADADK is an SME from Jordan that employs wireless smart sensors for the detection of both visible and hidden water leaks.

Eau et Vie is an NPO from France that offers individual taps to the homes of impoverished urban residents, ensuring access to clean water in slum areas.

TransForm is an NPO from Denmark that employs innovative Rootzone soil filter technology for the cost-effective treatment of wastewater, sewage, and sludge without relying on energy or chemicals.

The Climate Action finalists are deploying innovative solutions that address climate change and protect the planet's natural resources.

The Climate Action finalists are:

CarbonCure is an SME from Canada that specialises in carbon removal technology. They inject CO₂ into fresh concrete, effectively reducing its carbon footprint while maintaining performance standards.

The Foundation for Amazon Sustainability is an NPO from Brazil dedicated to implementing projects and programmes that advance environmental conservation and empower individuals to protect their rights.

Kelp Blue is an SME from Namibia that contributes to the restoration of natural ocean wilderness and the mitigation of excess CO₂ in the atmosphere.

The Global High Schools’ finalists presented project-based, student-led sustainability solutions, with finalists divided into 6 regions. 

In the Health, Food, Energy, Water and Climate Action categories, each winner receives US$600,000. Each of the six winning Global High Schools receives up to US$100,000.
