야마하 라이트워터스(Yamaha Rightwaters)는 10월 24일(현지시각) 조지아대학교(University of Gerogia, UGA)와 협력해 플라스틱 재활용 프로그램을 강화하는 데 초점을 맞춘 '지속가능성 인증 캡스톤 프로젝트(Sustainability Certificate Capstone Project)'를 후원했다고 밝혔다. 이 프로젝트는 고객이 긴급한 지속가능성 문제를 해결하도록 지원하는 동시에 학생이 가치 있는 기술을 개발할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

캡스톤 팀은 일반적으로 70개 이상의 전공 분야에서 온 3~5명의 학생으로 구성되고, 전문성을 제공하기 위해 교수가 멘토로 감독한다. 조지아대학교 생태학 학사 과정을 밟고 있는 마치 윌릿스(Maci Willetts)와 소비자 복지를 위한 사회적 기업가정신 과학(Bachelor of Science in Social Entrepreneurship for Consumer Wellbeing) 학사 과정을 밟고 있는 엘리자베스 핀리(Elizabeth Finley)는 이 프로젝트를 통해 지속 가능성 인증(Sustainability Certificate)을 얻기 위해 노력하고 있다.

조슈아 그라이어(Joshua Grier) 지속 가능성 관리자는 "이 프로젝트는 야마하 라이트워터스 플라스틱 재활용 프로그램의 성공에 기반을 두고 이 두 학생이 야마하 고객과 협력해 공급망 플라스틱을 수집하고 이를 생산적인 용도로 전환할 수 있도록 한다"며 "가장 큰 플라스틱 폐기물 제네레이터 근처에서 재활용 파트너와 가공업체를 확인함으로써 우리는 2차 배출을 최소화하는 동시에 파트너간 관계를 강화할 수 있다"고 말했다.

그라이어 관리자는 이어 "우리는 마치와 엘리자베스와 함께 일하기를 기대하고 있다"며 "이들이 이 프로젝트를 진전하는 데 큰 도움이 되기를 바란다"고 덧붙였다.

학생들이 캡스톤 프로그램을 통해 얻게 될 학제간 지속 가능성 인증(Certificate in Interdisciplinary Sustainability)은 지역사회에서 중대하고 체계적인 변화를 만들 수 있는 기술을 갖추도록 설계돼 보다 지속가능한 미래를 위한 길을 닦는다.

지속 가능성 인증을 취득하는 과정을 통해 학생들은 지속 가능성과 관련된 무수한 문제에 대한 지식을 습득하고 지속 가능성이 개인과 지역사회, 세계에 의미하는 바에 대한 관점을 배움으로써 실제 상황에 적용할 수 있다.

야마하 라이트워터스는 야마하 마린(Yamaha Marine)의 보존 및 수질을 위한 노력을 모두 아우르는 국가 지속 가능성 프로그램이다. 프로그램 이니셔티브에는 △서식지 복원(Habitat Restoration) △과학 연구 지원(SUpport for Scientific Research) △침입종 억제(Mitigation of Invasive Species) △해양 잔해물 감소(Reduction of Marine Debris) △환경 교육(Environmantal Stewardship Education) 등이 포함된다.

야마하 라이트워터스는 야마하의 오랜 차연자원 보존 역사, 지속가능한 휴양 어업 및 수자원 지원, 해양 자원에 대한 낚시꾼 윤리강령을 강화한다.

Yamaha Rightwaters™ Sponsors University of Georgia Capstone Course to Enhance Plastics Recycling Program

Kennesaw, GA – Oct. 24, 2023 –Yamaha Rightwaters joined forces with the University of Georgia® (UGA®) to sponsor a Sustainability Certificate Capstone Project focused on enhancing its current plastics recycling program. Sustainability Certificate Capstone Projects help clients address pressing sustainability challenges while providing students with an opportunity to apply their academic learning and develop valuable skills.

Capstone teams are typically made up of 3-5 students from over 70 majors, overseen by a faculty mentor to ensure quality and provide expertise. UGA students Maci Willetts, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Ecology, and Elizabeth Finley, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Social Entrepreneurship for Consumer Wellbeing, are the two students currently working to earn Certificates in Interdisciplinary Sustainability through the Yamaha Rightwaters Capstone Project. 

“This project builds off of the success of the Yamaha Rightwaters plastics recycling program and allows these two students to work with dealerships, boat builders, and other Yamaha customers to collect supply chain plastic and redirect it towards productive uses,” said Joshua Grier, Sustainability Manager. “The students will help identify and catalog our largest producers as well as calculate the impacts of our diversions. By identifying recycling partners and processors near to our largest plastic waste generators, we can minimize secondary emissions and strengthen relationships within our dealer and boat builder communities. We look forward to working with Maci and Elizabeth and we’re eager to see how they can help us move the project forward.” 

The Certificate in Interdisciplinary Sustainability the students will earn through the Capstone program is designed to equip them with skills to make significant, systemic changes in their communities, paving the way for a more sustainable future. Through the process of obtaining the sustainability certificate, students gain knowledge about the myriad of issues pertaining to sustainability, achieve enlightened perspectives about what sustainability means for individuals, communities, and the world, and acquire experience applying this understanding to meaningful, real-world situations.

Yamaha Rightwaters is a national sustainability program that encompasses all of Yamaha Marine’s conservation and water quality efforts. Program initiatives include habitat restoration, support for scientific research, mitigation of invasive species, the reduction of marine debris and environmental stewardship education. Yamaha Rightwaters reinforces Yamaha’s long-standing history of natural resource conservation, support of sustainable recreational fishing and water resources and Angler Code of Ethics, which requires pro anglers to adhere to principles of stewardship for all marine resources.
