베올리아(Veolia)는 1월 11일(현지시각) 2030년까지 최고 가치 창출 프로젝트(The Best Value Creating Projects)를 위한 40억 유로 규모의 성장 지향적 투자를 가속화한다고 밝혔다. 베올리아는 이미 100억 유로 규모의 사업을 에너지와 연계하고 있으며, 이를 발전시키기 위해 포트폴리오 강화를 목표로 하고 있다. 

세계는 지속 불가능한 에너지 낭비와 손실, 미개발 에너지원에 대한 무관심으로 더 이상 지속할 수 없는 에너지 환경을 맞이하는 등 중대한 변화를 겪고 있다. 지역 탈탄소화 에너지(Local Decarbonizing Energy)는 탈탄소화 및 자급자족 달성 과제를 해결하기 위해 향후 몇 년 동안 5천억 유로 규모의 시장을 더욱 확대할 전망이다.

베올리아는 지역 탈탄소화 에너지의 주요 업체로서 400GW 이상의 미사용 지역 에너지 매장량(Unused Local Energy Reserves)의 잠재력을 활용할 수 있다. 특히, 이 새로운 자원은 산업 내 에너지 효율뿐 아니라, 아직 개발되지 않은 바이오에너지(Bioenergy), 폐열 및 냉각(Waste Heat and Cooling), 지역 난방 네트워크(District Heating Networks)의 효율성 향상에 기여할 수 있다.

미개발 에너지는 새로운 자원을 추출할 필요가 없으며, 저렴한 비용으로 공급돼 5천만 명 이상의 소비를 충당하고 화석연료에 대한 유럽연합(EU)의 의존도를 최대 30% 줄일 수 있다.

에스텔 브라클리아노프(Estelle Brachlianoff) 베올리아의 최고경영자(CEO)는 "더 이상 에너지를 낭비하거나 잃을 여유가 없다"며 "화석연료 수입을 줄일 수 있는 400GW 규모의 미개발 에너지 잠재력을 통해 지역 탈탄소화 에너지 솔루션의 개발이 필요하다"고 말했다.

브라클리아노프 최고경영자는 이어 "최근 제시된 COP28 목표를 충족하고 이를 능가해야 한다"며 "이제는 지역 차원에서 전 세계적으로 행동을 취해야 할 때"라고 강조했다.

This unexploited local, affordable supply, that does not necessitate the extraction of new resources, can be sufficient to cover the consumption of a country with a population of over 50 million, or to reduce the EU's dependence on imported fossil fuels (gas and coal) by 30%.
