지난해 4월에 가동한 인디애나주 포트빌(Fortville) 소재 새로운 수처리장은 최근 처리 능력이 향상됨에 따라 증가하는 지역 사회의 식수 요구를 충족하고 있다.

무독성 결정질 콘크리트 방수재인 페네트론 애드믹스 SB(PENTERON ADMIX SB)는 수처리장의 콘크리트 탱크를 지속적인 물 노출로부터 방수하고 보호한다.

최근, 시의회는 레이놀즈 건설(Reynolds Construction)과 GRW 엔지니어들에게 새로운 수처리장 건설을 위임했다.

수처리장에서 콘크리트 홀딩 탱크의 내구성은 주로 내장된 강철 보강재를 부식으로부터 보호하는 것에 달려 있다. 적절한 방수가 되지 않으면 균열, 접합부 파손, 화학 공격 등이 발생하며 이는 콘크리트 열화의 원인이 된다.

첸 이사는 “페네트론 애드믹스 SB는 1천100만 달러 규모의 새로운 프로젝트를 위해 채택됐다”고 말했다. 

결정형 방수 혼합재인 페네트론 애드믹스 SB는 베이스 매트, 벽, 기둥, 구조용 슬래브, 처마밑면 등 모든 처리 및 저장 탱크를 위해 콘크리트 혼합물(concrete mix)에 섞였다. 

페네트론 애드믹스 SB 처리된 콘크리트는 불침투성으로 수처리장에서 발생하는 일정한 정수압에도 물과 화학물질이 콘크리트로 유입되는 것을 막는다. 

미래의 미세 균열을 영구적으로 자가 치유할 수 있는 기능으로 콘크리트의 서비스 수명 동안 손상이 발생하는 것을 방지한다.

크리스토퍼 첸은 “콘크리트 방수 혼합재인 페네트론 애드믹스 SB는 무독성이고, VOCs를 포함하지 않는다”며 “NSF 61 인증을 받은 혼합재로서, 음용수 분야에 이상적인 솔루션이다”라고 말했다.

Indiana Water Treatment Plant Specifies Penetron as Durable, Non-Toxic Concrete Waterproofing Solution

 The new water treatment plant in Fortville, Indiana, went online in April 2023. With expanded treatment capacity, the new plant now meets the growing community's increasing demand for potable water. PENETRON ADMIX SB, a non-toxic crystalline concrete waterproofing admixture, was used to waterproof and protect the facility's concrete tanks from constant exposure to water.

Close to the geographic center of Indiana, Fortville is approximately 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Indianapolis and part of that city's metropolitan area. With a population of over 4,800, the town features a vibrant downtown with shops, restaurants, and numerous popular summer events.

Recently, the town council mandated Reynolds Construction and GRW Engineers with the building of a new water treatment plant. "The previous water treatment plant, built in 1955, had been updated over the years, but the reinforced concrete structures were showing signs of advanced deterioration and were approaching the end of their service life," explains Christopher Chen, Director of The Penetron Group. "In addition, the town continues to grow – and forecasts further growth for the coming years, which means demand for water will increase as well."

The durability of concrete holding tanks in water treatment plants depends primarily on the protection of the imbedded steel reinforcement from corrosion. Without adequate waterproofing, cracking, joint-failure, and chemical attack quickly become sources of concrete deterioration.

"The project engineers, specialized in the design of water treatment plants, knew very well about the importance of a reliable and durable concrete waterproofing solution to maximize the service life of the new facility," adds Christopher Chen. "PENETRON ADMIX SB was specified for the new US$11 million project."

PENETRON ADMIX SB, a crystalline waterproofing admixture, was added to the concrete mix for all treatment and holding tanks, including the base mat, walls, columns, structural slab, and soffits. imi provided the concrete mix for the foundation placements and Shelby Materials finished the remaining concrete work.

PENETRON ADMIX SB-treated concrete is impermeable, stopping water and chemicals from entering the concrete, even under the constant hydrostatic pressure encountered in a water treatment plant.
