천연 가스 및 청정 에너지 서비스 제공업체인 뉴저지 리소시스(New Jersey Resources, NJR)는 1월 24일(현지시각) 환경·사회·지배구조(ESG) 우선순위 및 지속 가능성 의제에 대한 진행 상황을 공유하기 위한 '2023년 기업 지속 가능성 보고서(2023 Corporate Sustainability Report)'를 발표했다.

뉴저지 리소시스는 뉴저지 오듀본(New Jersey Audubon)과 파트너십을 통해 지역 환경 개선을 위해 자선 재단으로부터 5년간 56만 달러 규모의 기금 지원 계획을 공개했다. 이 기금은 뉴저지 리소시스가 자선단체를 통해 5년간 200만 달러를 기부하겠다는 2023년 목표 설정으로부터 시작됐으며, 지역사회의 천연자원과 환경관리에 대한 해안 기후 이니셔티브(Coastal Climate Initiative, CCI)를 지원한다.

56만 달러의 기금은 미국 뉴저지주 오션카운티(Ocean County) 버클리 타운십(Berkeley Township)에 있는 호브나니안 생추어리(Hovnanian Sactuary)의 서식지와 복원력 보존·복원·향상을 위한 뉴저지주 오듀본의 계획을 지원한다.

스티브 웨스토벤(Steve Westhoven) 뉴저지 리소시스의 사장은 "이해관계자를 위해 결과를 제공하고 지속 가능성 이니셔티브에 대한 조치를 주도하기 위해 노력하고 있다"며 "지역사회에 변화를 만들고 청정 에너지 혁신을 지속 추진하고 있다"고 말했다.

뉴저지 리소시스는 100에이커 이상의 고지대 숲을 복원하고 강화해 지역사회의 주민을 위해 산불 위험을 줄이고, 수질을 개선하며 숲의 기후 복원력을 향상시킬 수 있다. 특히, 바네갓 만(Barnegat Bay) 유역의 천연자원을 보호하고 대서양 백삼나무 숲을 15에이커 이상 추가로 개선할 수 있다.

또한, 뉴저지 리소시스는 지역 주민과 방문객을 위한 5마일 길이의 산책로, 공공시설, 표지판 등 새롭게 개선된 휴양 기회를 개발할 수 있다.

이번 2023년 기업 지속 가능성 보고서는 탄소 배출량 감소 목표 및 탈탄소화 우선순위 등 ESG 이니셔티브 전반에 걸친 지속 가능성 의제에 대한 진행 상황을 보여준다. 

뉴저지 리소시스는 이번 보고서를 통해 뉴저지주에 있는 북미 최대 캡 매립지 태양 전지판과 최대 규모의 부유식 태양 전지판의 완공으로 혁신적인 재생 에너지 분야에서 NJR 청정 에너지 벤처(NJR Clean Energy Ventures)에 대한 리더십을 공고히 했다.

또한, 뉴저지 리소시스의 주요 자회사인 뉴저지 내추럴 가스(New Jersey Natural Gas, NJNG)의 에너지 효율 프로그램에 연간 최대 5천900만 달러를 투자해 고객이 에너지 소비를 줄일 수 있도록 지원함으로써 탄소 배출량을 감소시켰다.

아울러, 뉴저지 리소시스는 자체 시설에서 탄소 포집 기술 및 고효율 가스 히트펌프 등 최첨단 저탄소 에너지 솔루션을 지속적으로 개발했다.

이 밖에도 뉴저지 리소시스는 학술 및 산업 연구기관과 협력해 △GTI 에너지의 신기술 및 넷제로 인프라 프로그램 △스탠포드 대학교(Stanford University)의 천연 가스 이니셔티브 △프린스턴 대학교(Princeton University)의 에너지 및 환경을 위한 앤들링거 센터(Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment) 등을 지원했다.

New Jersey Audubon to receive $560,000 charitable gift to help transform Hovnanian Sanctuary in Ocean County, NJ

Wall, NJ, January 24, 2024 – In conjunction with its 71st Annual Shareowners Meeting, New Jersey Resources (NYSE: NJR) today released its fiscal 2023 Corporate Sustainability Report highlighting the company’s progress on Environmental, Societal and Governance (ESG) priorities and its sustainability agenda.

NJR also announced a milestone five-year funding commitment of $560,000 from its charitable foundation to advance local environmental improvements in partnership with New Jersey Audubon. This gift is made possible through NJR’s 2023 pledge to commit $2 million over five years through its charities, supporting the work of its Coastal Climate Initiative (CCI) on natural resource and environmental stewardship in the communities it serves.

The $560,000 in funding will support New Jersey Audubon’s efforts to preserve, restore and enhance the habitats and resiliency of the Hovnanian Sanctuary in Berkeley Township, Ocean County, New Jersey  part of the Pinelands National Reserve.

NJR’s charitable gift will help support::

Restoration and enhancement of over 100 acres of upland forest in part to reduce the risk of wildfire to local communities and residents, improve water quality and enhance the climate resiliency of the forest.

Enhancement and restoration of an additional 15+ acres of Atlantic white cedar forest to help reverse the decline of this critical natural resource in the Barnegat Bay watershed that provides important ecological and weather resilience benefits to coastal areas.

Development of new and improved recreational opportunities for the area’s residents and visitors, including five miles of walking trails, public access points, mapping, and signage.

NJR’s fiscal 2023 Corporate Sustainability Report released today details progress on its sustainability agenda spanning environmental, social and governance initiatives — including emission reduction goals and decarbonization priorities — across the company.
