베올리아(Veolia North America)는 1월 25일(현지시각) 클린어스(Clean Earth)와 미국 아칸소주(Arkansas)에 위치한 새로운 최첨단 화력 시설(New State-of-the-art Thermal Facility)의 소각 용량 확보를 위한 장기적인 협력 협약(Long-term Collaborative Agreement)을 체결했다고 밝혔다. 

이번 5개년 협약(Five-year Agreement)은 업계 최초로 이뤄진 것이며, 2025년에 개시하는 새로운 시설이 추가 용량을 제공함에 따라 폐기물 관리 산업에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 것으로 기대된다.

제프 베즈윅(Jeff Beswick) 클린어스 사장은 "이 협약은 지난 몇 년간 지속된 업계의 도전과제 중 일부를 해결할 것"이라며 "국가에 이익이 될 이번 계획을 위해 베올리아와 협력하게 돼 기쁘다"고 말했다.

프레드 반 헴스(Fred Van Heems) 베올리아 사장은 "북미 지역의 연구 및 제조 산업의 부활로 복잡한 폐기물 흐름에 대한 안전하고 지속가능한 관리가 요구되고 있다"며 "이번 시설은 새로운 오염물질 관리를 지원하는 데 필요한 용량을 제공할 것이며, 이번 시설에서 국가의 가장 어려운 환경 문제를 해결하기 위해 함께 일하게 돼 기쁘다"고 밝혔다.

베올리아의 새로운 시설은 현장에서 직접 생산된 현지 탈탄소 에너지로 가동될 예정이다. 이 시설은 북미 최초 유해 폐기물 시설이다. 또한, 보일러와 증기 터빈에서 회수된 폐열을 포집해 시간당 5㎿(메가와트) 규모의 현장 태양광 발전을 통해 전력을 공급할 예정이며, 시장에 보다 지속가능한 선택지를 제공하고 소비자 및 대중에게 혜택을 줄 것이다. 

약 1천500에이커(acres) 규모의 산림을 다시 조성하는 계획은 탄소 배출을 차단하고 지역 서식지를 보호하며, 침식을 방지할 것이다. 

베올리아는 2025년 원활한 전환을 위한 활동을 강화하기 위해 2024년 한 해 동안 클린어스에 대한 폐기물 처리 접근성을 높일 예정이다. 

한편, 클린어스는 폐기물 및 오염물질에 대한 폐기, 재이용 솔루션을 제공하는 미국 최대의 특수 폐기물 업체로, 특수 폐기물을 재활용해 지구를 위한 더 나은 미래를 목표로 노력하고 있다. 클린어스의 리졸브(ReSolve) 프로그램은 PFAS 문제를 관리하고 처리할 수 있는 맞춤형 솔루션을 제공하고 있다.

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA AND BOSTON, MA – (January 25, 2024) – Clean Earth, a division of Enviri Corporation (NYSE: NVRI), and Veolia North America, have executed a long-term collaborative agreement for significant incineration capacity at the new state-of-the-art thermal facility in Southwest Arkansas. The five-year agreement, structured to provide guaranteed access for Clean Earth by Veolia, is a first-of-its-kind in the industry and a positive advancement for the waste management industry and customers as the new facility, opening in 2025, will provide much-needed additional capacity.

Veolia’s new facility will be powered by local decarbonizing energy generated directly on-site, North America’s first for a hazardous waste plant. The power will be supplied by capturing waste heat recovered from a boiler and steam turbine and generating five megawatts of on-site solar power per hour, creating a more sustainable option for the marketplace and benefiting consumers and the public. A plan to reforest nearly 1,500 acres surrounding the property will sequester carbon emissions, provide protection for local habitat, and prevent erosion.

Veolia North America will increase waste treatment access for Clean Earth throughout 2024 to ramp up activities for a smooth transition in 2025.
