사우디아라비아 건국기념일인 2월 22일 사우디 국영 해수담수청(Saline Water Conversion Corporation, 이하 SWCC)이 창립 50주년을 맞이했다.

SWCC는 사우디아라비아 전역의 도시와 주에 담수를 공급하여 ‘사우디아라비아 비전 2030(Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030)’의 일환으로 왕국의 지속가능한 발전과 경제 전환을 지원하고 있다.

SWCC 총재인 엔지니어 압둘라 빈 이브라힘 알라불카림(Abdullah bin Ibrahim Alabdulkarim)은 “우리나라(사우디 아라비아)와 마찬가지로 지난 50년 동안의 SWCC의 여정은 지속적인 발전과 엄청난 발전을 이루었다”고 말했다.

알라불카림 총재는 특히 “사우디인으로서의 우리의 단결과 국가적 자부심은 과거 및 현재 직원들의 헌신, 그리고 우리의 뛰어난 리더십의 강력한 지원과 결합되어 SWCC가 우리나라를 자랑스럽게 만든 업계 세계 최초의 많은 성과를 달성할 수 있게 해주었다”라고 역설했다.

이러한 성과 중에는 2021년에 완공된 세계 최대의 담수 운송용 터널(tunnel for the transmission of desalinated water)과 2022년에 완공된 하루 생산 능력이 15만 입방미터(㎥)에 달하는 세계 최대의 부유식 담수화 플랜트(floating desalination plant)가 있다.

SWCC는 2022년 최신 담수화 시설을 건설하여  기네스 세계 기록을 세웠는데, 이 시설은 담수화 시설 중 에너지 소비가 가장 낮았다. 2024년 초부터 SWCC는 담수화 산업의 다양한 분야에서 9개의 새로운 기네스(Guinness) 세계 기록을 세웠다.

SWCC는 1974년 창립이래 전국에 33개 이상의 담수화 플랜트와 139개 이상의 정수장을 구축, 운영해왔다. 혁신적이고 에너지 효율적인 녹색기술의 연구 개발에 투자했으며 국제 파트너와 협력하여 사우디아라비아의 글로벌 영향력을 강화했다.

SWCC는 하루 100만㎥ 이상의 담수 생산 능력을 갖춘 주바일(Jubail) 해수담화 플랜트를 포함해 2024년 3개의 신규 담수화 플랜트를 가동할 예정이다.

주바일에 있는 SWCC의 물기술 및 고급 연구혁신 연구소(Institute for Innovation in Water Technologies and Advanced Research)는 세계 최대의 물 연구개발 센터이다.  이 연구소는 현재 85개 이상의 연구 프로젝트와 11개의 지역 및 국제 연구 협약을 맺고 있다.

SWCC의 세계적으로 유명한 지역 혁신 중 하나는 파이프 부식 방지에 사용할 화학물질의 대안으로 야자수에서 효과적인 포뮬러를 추출하는 것이다. SWCC는 33개의 특허를 등록했고, 20개의 맞춤형 플랜트를 자체 설계했다.

카이바르 플랜트(Khaybar plant)는 사람의 개입 없이 오로지 첨단기술과 인공지능(AI)만으로 가동되는 세계 최초의 플랜트이다. SWCC는 또한 3개 프로젝트에 90대 이상의 드론을 배치하고 사우디 전역의 다양한 플랜트에 70대 이상의 로봇을 배치하고 있다.

SWCC는 또한 담수화를 위한 글로벌 혁신(Global Prize Innovation for Desalination, GPID) 경쟁 부문에서 세계 최대의 산업상에 총 1천만 달러를 제공하고 있다. SWCC는 글로벌 물 부족 문제를 해결하고 전 세계 사람들의 삶을 개선하기 위해 물 담수화 기술과 관행을 발전시키기 위해 GPID를 만들었다. 매년 열리는 이 대회에는 27개국 이상에서 100명 이상의 참가자들이 참가한다.

SWCC 총재인 엔지니어 압둘라 빈 이브라힘 알라불카림(Abdullah bin Ibrahim Alabdulkarim)은 “물은 단순한 자원 그 이상이다. 그것은 사회적 복지의 핵심이다. 실체로서 SWCC는 개인의 미시적 수준과 국가의 거시적 수준 모두에 경제적 영향을 미친다”라면서 “2024년 2월 22일 사우디아라비아 건국일을 기념하면서 SWCC는 우리 위대한 국가의 번영과 평화로운 미래를 기원한다”고 강조했다.

SWCC Celebrates 50 Years of Water Supply to Saudi Arabia on Founding Day

As the nation celebrates Founding Day and Saudi Arabia’s rich cultural heritage and history on February 22, the Kingdom’s desalinated water supplier, the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), marks its 50th anniversary.

 SWCC supplies desalinated water to cities and governorates across Saudi Arabia, supporting the Kingdom's sustainable development and economic transformation as a vital resource as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.

 Engineer Abdullah bin Ibrahim Alabdulkarim, the governor of SWCC, said: “Like our nation, SWCC’s journey over the past 50 years is a story of continuous evolution and tremendous progress.”

 "Our unity and national pride as Saudis, combined with the dedication of past and present employees, as well as the strong support of our exceptional leadership, have enabled SWCC to achieve many industry world firsts that have made our nation proud,” Alabdulkarim said.

 Among these achievements are the world’s largest tunnel for the transmission of desalinated water, inaugurated in 2021, and the world’s largest floating plant, with a production capacity of 150,000 cubic meters per day, launched in 2022. 

SWCC set a Guinness World Record when it inaugurated its newest desalination facility in 2022, which had the lowest energy consumption of any such plant. Since the start of 2024, SWCC has set nine new Guinness World Records in various areas of the desalination industry.

 From its beginnings in 1974, SWCC has established and operated over 33 desalination plants and 139 purification plants across the country. It has invested in research and development of innovative, energy-efficient, green technologies, and collaborated with international partners to enhance Saudi Arabia’s global influence.

 SWCC is scheduled to launch three new desalination plants in 2024, including the Jubail plant with a production capacity of more than 1 million cubic meters of desalinated water per day.

 SWCC’s Institute for Innovation in Water Technologies and Advanced Research in Jubail is the world’s largest water research-and-development center. The institute currently has over 85 research projects and 11 local and international research agreements. 

One of SWCC’s globally renowned local innovations is extracting an effective formula from palm trees as an alternative to chemicals to use for pipe corrosion protection. The SWCC has registered 33 patents and self-designed 20 customized plants.

 The Khaybar plant is the first of its kind in the world that operates without any human intervention and solely on advanced technology and artificial intelligence (AI). SWCC also deploys over 90 drones on three of its projects and over 70 robots in various plants across the Kingdom.

 SWCC also offers the world’s biggest industry prize, a total value of USD10 million, in its Global Prize Innovation for Desalination (GPID) competition. SWCC created GPID to advance the technologies and practices of water desalination to address global water scarcity and improve the lives of people around the world. The annual competition attracts more than 100 participants from over 27 countries.

 “Water is more than a resource; it is key to social well-being. As an entity, SWCC has an economic impact on both a micro level for individuals and a macro level for the nation,” Alabdulkarim said. “As we celebrate Saudia Arabia’s Founding Day on 22 February 2024, SWCC extends our best wishes for a prosperous and peaceful future for our great nation.”
