GE 어플라이언스(GE Appliances)는 2월 22일(현지시각) 탄탈루스 시스템(Tantalus Systems)과 HVAC 시스템 및 온수기에서 실시간 데이터를 사용해 에너지 공급 및 소비 관리를 위한 파트너십을 체결했다고 발표했다.

서번트(Savant)와 파트너십을 맺은 업계 최초의 GE 어플라이언스 에코밸런스 시스템(GE Appliances EcoBalance System)은 탄탈루스 시스템의 트루센스 게이트웨이(TRUSense Gateway)와 통합돼 공기 및 온수 난방 제품 등 개별 가전제품을 순환하고 그리드 현대화 이니셔티브를 지원할 예정이다.

에코밸런스 시스템은 서번트와 협력해 소비자가 가전제품과 HVAC 시스템, 온수기의 에너지 관리를 제어할 수 있도록 하는 기능을 제공하고 있다. 탄툴루스의 트루센스 게이트웨이는 기존 계량기와 소켓 사이에 설치돼 유틸리티 서비스 구역의 계량기 교체 비용 및 노동시간을 감소시킬 수 있다. 

케빈 놀란(Kevin Nolan) GE 어플라이언스 사장은 "혁신적인 스마트 제품 포트폴리오와 탄탈루스 기술 등 공유 역량을 통해 비용뿐 아니라 국가의 전력망을 절약할 수 있다"며 "GE 어플라이언스 제품은 현재 미국 전체 가정의 절반을 차지하고 있고, 2천600만 개의 연결 가능한 가전제품 설치 기반을 보유하고 있으며, 전기를 절약하는 데 중대한 영향을 미치기 위해 수요 관리 시스템과 협력할 수 있는 역량을 갖추고 있다"고 말했다.

탄탈루스 시스템은 변전소에서 가전제품, 온수기, HVAC 시스템, 전기차 충전기에 이르기까지 장치와 시스템 전반에 걸쳐 데이터를 활용하고 285개 이상의 유틸리티 및 에너지 공급업체의 배전 그리드 현대화를 지원하고 있다. 

GE 어플라이언스 에코밸런스 시스템에 탄탈루스를 추가함으로써 제품은 에너지 회사와 통신할 수 것으로 기대된다. 예를 들어, 온수기는 에너지로 충전될 수 있으며 HVAC 시스템은 몇 도 조정해 에너지를 절약할 수 있다. 

이러한 기능을 활용해 유틸리티가 성능 저하 없이 탄소발자국을 줄이고 에너지 균형을 맞출 수 있다. 또한, 이 기술은 자연 재해에 대비할 수 있다. 온수기 등 특정 제품은 태풍 등 재해에 앞서 전기를 충전하고 전력 중단 시 축열 장치로 사용될 수 있다.

한편, 에코밸런스 시스템의 통합 기능은 2024년 국제빌더쇼(International Builders Show), 디스트리뷰테크 인터내셔널(DISTRIBUTECH International), 테크어드밴티지(TechAdvantage)에서 선보일 예정이다.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. and BURNABY, B.C. (February 22, 2024) – GE Appliances, a Haier company, and Tantalus Systems (TSX:GRID) today announce a partnership that will revolutionize the way home appliances, HVAC systems and water heaters use real-time data to manage energy delivery and consumption. The industry-first GE Appliances EcoBalance System in partnership with Savant will integrate with Tantalus’ TRUSense Gateway to cycle individual home appliances, including air and water heating products, to support grid modernization initiatives.

GE Appliances EcoBalance System in partnership with Savant provides market-leading capabilities allowing consumers to control their energy management of home appliances, HVAC systems and water heaters. Tantalus’ TRUSense Gateway is installed between existing meters and meter sockets, eliminating the costly and labor-intensive process of replacing all the meters in a utility service area.

Tantalus helps more than 285 utilities and energy providers modernize their distribution grids by harnessing the power of data across devices and systems deployed from the substation to home appliances, water heaters, HVAC systems, or electric vehicle chargers. By adding Tantalus to the GE Appliances EcoBalance System, products will be able to “communicate” with energy companies. For example, refrigerator defrost or ice cycles can run during off-peak hours, water heaters can be charged with energy for use later in the day, and HVAC systems can be adjusted a few degrees to save energy and reduce peak demand.

These capabilities can be leveraged to help utilities reduce their carbon footprint and balance energy load profiles - without sacrificing performance or style. In addition, the technology is useful when utilities are planning for natural disasters. Certain items, like water heaters, can be charged with electricity in advance of an incoming storm and used as a thermal storage device if power is disrupted.
